Thrift shopping has made a comeback in the fashion industry. It has also become a frequently used and socially accepted term in the fashion industry, that every fashion forward person, fashion influencer and fashion content creator, not only use the term thrift shopping but also thrift shops. You’d be amazed to find out that your favorite fashion blogger and influencer is an ardent thrift shopper.
Most of them make these revelations on their platforms while some do not, but you shouldn’t be fooled into believing that they do not thrift for clothes and other accessories every once in a while.
In case you are wondering what thrift shopping is and all about, I will do the honors of explaining it to you so that when you go out there, you would be able to say or write a thing or more about thrift shopping.
Thrift shopping to me is simply the art of acquiring and showing love to pre-loved items. These items range from fashion items like mom’s jeans, lightly worn vintage, designer bags, designer shoes, to household items, home décor, supplies for your hobbies, cotton bed sheets, an armchair, baskets, picture frames, dishes, glasses, curtains, futon cover, bath mat, baking pans, mirrors and more!.
Thrift shopping is also the process of buying fairly used, lightly worn and/or cleared items at an unbelievably cheaper rate. An item that was originally sold for $30 could be bought for $3 at a thrift store with its quality un-compromised or a little bit compromised and most times with its tags intact!
There are over hundreds of individuals who specialize in selling thrift items. This is called ‘THRIFT FLIPPING’.On Instagram, selling thrift items or thrift flipping; most especially fashion items have become a multi-million dollar enterprise. It’s quite lucrative. These individuals go to larger thrift stores in markets and carefully handpick high end pieces, improve and curate what they feel are the best choices for their teeming clients and resell to these lovers of thrift items online with good profits.
Like I said, these vendors, select items they ‘feel’ are what their clients would love. What if you have a very unique taste? What if these vendors do not get the thrift items you like or worst still they have the thrift items you love but not in your size, as in cases of thrift shoes or thrift clothes? What do you do? I can tell you, nothing hurts more than seeing a fashion item you love but it’s either under sized or over sized. It hurts! This is why you should learn how to thrift shop for yourself by yourself.
In case you’re having some cold feet about thrift shopping or you’re wondering if there are reasons why you should thrift shop. Here are important benefits of thrift shopping;
- SAVE MONEY;
Starting with the most obvious benefit of thrift shopping; to save money. Items are ridiculously cheap at thrift stores, so why spend so much on a brand new item when you can get same thing or something better, gently used at a very lower price?
- DEVELOP YOUR OWN UNIQUE SENSE OF STYLE;
Because thrift store items are so cheap, it’s fun to experiment with styles or colors, piecing together funky outfits, but with practice comes confidence. When everyone shops at the same trendy, brand name stores, it’s inevitable that someday you’ll meet an unexpected twin in public, in an awkward ‘bish stole my look’ situation; wearing the exact same shirt or dress as you. Believe me; no one wants to be that person.
- SAVE THE PLANET
Buying and wearing thrift clothes are a great way to reduce waste and pollution. Every garment thrift shopped means one less new one produced, which is important because regardless of material, the production of clothing is costly to the environment. Producing synthetic fibers like polyester requires lots of energy, as well as crude oil like petroleum; byproducts include toxic gases and chemicals.
- YOU CAN INSTILL GOOD SPENDING HABITS IN YOUR KIDS
If you have children, taking them to a thrift store is a good way to teach them how to find good products while saving money.
While there are numerous benefits of thrift shopping, there is just one disadvantage to it, which is that one could be so unfortunate to get a damaged item or an item that has almost outlived its shelf life and would sooner become useless to the individual that bought it. Not to worry because this shortcoming can be highly avoided if you go through the following steps outlined below while thrift shopping.
10 PRACTICAL TIPS ON HOW TO THRIFT SHOP NICE CLOTHES & OTHER ITEMS LIKE A PRO IN 2019
- MAKE A LIST OF WHAT YOU WANT
This is a great way to begin a thrift shopping adventure; know what you want and make a list of them or just know what it is, if it’s just an item. This way the adventure becomes less overwhelming. If you want jeans, head straight to that section and if its dresses you want, you would want to head straight to dress’ section and make your unique choices.
2. KNOW THE TRENDS
It is not enough to know what you want or make a list of them. Before you go thrift shopping, ensure you know what’s on trend. This doesn’t mean you should look out for replicas of items in vogue, you might certainly not find them in thrift stores. This means you should know for instance that Mom’s Jeans are back in trend, or that a certain color is in vogue. With this in mind, it makes it easier for to thrift shop easily and be in tune with current trends.
3. KNOW YOUR COLORS
Knowing your colors makes thrift shopping easier and faster for you. Truth is, in most thrift shores you would find an intimidating amount of clothes and other accessories. Knowing your color makes the thrift selection process faster, as it helps you know where to look first and whether to continue searching or not.
4. CHECK OUT THE MEN’S SECTION
This might sound insane for some ladies, but if you really want to make the best out of your thrift shopping adventure and find yourself some amazing thrift items, the men’s section is a place to look. Over there you would find thrift clothes like over sized sweaters, flannels and blazers for layering, to track pants and sporty tees, the options are pretty much endless and amazing.
5. WEAR COMFORTABLE CLOTHING
Thrift shopping can be overwhelming sometimes, so it is best you come prepared in comfortable clothing. Also wear clothes that you can easily try clothes on top of and use the mirrors around the store or your phone to check if they fit properly.
6. VISIT FREQUENTLY
When you visit thrift stores frequently, you stand better chances of finding the gold hidden within. Thrift stores’ inventory goes fast, sometimes selling as soon as it’s put out. It is important to visit frequently, before all of the good stuff is gone. You will also find it much easier to spot things that you like without having to do too much digging
7. LOOK OUT FOR TAG SALES OR SPECIALS
Often times, thrift stores hold tag sales, which usually means you can find great things for ridiculously low prices. Thrift stores also tend to hold sales in between seasons; for instance, if you want to find an over-sized sweater for super cheap, go in the spring when all winter inventory is on super sale and you’d be amazed at what you will find.
8. GO ALONE
Like I have earlier stated, thrift shopping can be very overwhelming and it’s more overwhelming when you’re new to it and have a very unique sense of style. When I thrift shop I go alone and ask the best friends to stay home or go about their other businesses.
While thrift shopping, you wouldn’t want someone constant looking at their time piece for you to remind you of how much time you’ve spent trying to select a ‘unique piece’ of yours, or someone trying to convince you otherwise of a certain item you picked for yourself. This is why you should go alone. Take your time, handpick your favorites yourself and if you make any bad choice, you learn and get better the next time you go thrift shopping.
9. DOUBLE CHECK ALL THRIFT ITEMS
This is the most essential tip for thrift shopping clothes or any item. Ensure you double check everything you buy before making payments and leaving any thrift store. Some thrift stores have no return policies, when you walk out with it; it has become yours forever. To avoid ending up with a bad thrift clothe or item, ensure you double check for stains, tears, broken zippers or missing pieces.
10. GO CREATE YOUR OWN MAGIC
Style yourself in your unique thrift clothes while you maintain a friendly budget looking like a bag of money!
I used these tips when I began thrift shopping, I still use them and it helped me a great deal, hence my purpose of sharing them with you. I hope they help you find amazing clothes and items at thrift stores. Do not forget to share your deals with me.
